On 6 July 1994, the body parts of an as yet unknown woman were found in the thicket at Gerrit van Hoekestraat in Retranchement (NL), near Het Zwin visitors’ centre.
Het Zwin is a nature conservation area straddling the border between Belgium and the Dutch province of Zeeland on the North Sea coast. On the night of Wednesday 6 July 1994, a tourist found body parts in the grass near what was then the Zwin Museum on the Dutch side of the border. The next day, more body parts were found in a ditch close to the first location. The body parts turned out to belong to a woman whose identity has remained unknown to this date. There are strong indications that a crime is involved. Despite extensive efforts, the police have been unable to establish the victim’s identity.
The victim probably died several weeks or possibly months before she was found. She was about 1.65-1.70 m tall. Her age is estimated at between 35 and 47, which means she was probably born between 1947-1959. The victim probably had light to olive-coloured skin and brown to black hair, that had probably been greying around the time she died. The police think she had brown eyes. The victim had poorly cared-for teeth that appear to have been maintained professionally up to about five years before her death. A tooth is missing from the upper right-hand side, which probably would have shown when she was smiling. The victim had spina bifida occulta but was probably mobile.
It is likely that the victim lived a large part of her life, but at least while she was a young adult, in an Eastern-European country. About five to ten years before her death, she changed her place of residence (house/abode). She probably moved to or within an Eastern-European country. If she lived in a Western-European country before her death, it must have been for a short period of time only.
