Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Westkapelle. A special welcome to the distinguished guests, ambassadors and other representatives of South Africa, Belgium, Canada, France, Norway and the United Kingdom, and to the representatives of the Netherlands. Welcome also to the representatives of the province and local government. Your presence means a great deal to us and reflects the lasting bonds between our nations. A special welcome to the commandos and former commandos with us today. We are honoured to have you here, as we remember the courage and sacrifice of those who served before you. A warm welcome also to the veterans, representatives of the armed forces, and military and veterans’ associations. A special welcome to the families and descendants of the servicemen who fought here, and of the residents who lost their lives. For you, remembrance is deeply personal. These are the stories of people you loved, or came to know through the memories of others. We are honoured that you are here to remember them with us. To the children and young people with us today, to the people of Westkapelle and Walcheren, and to all who feel connected to this place and its history: we are grateful that you are here.
